The Series E257 train was launched in December 2001 in order to replace the existing Series 183 and 189 trains, which had been used since the time when JR was known as JNR. Working from the basic design of the Series E653 and E751, new technology such as cold-weather and snow enduring structuring has been employed on the E257. The 5-color diamond patterns on its white body are also very unique.

The train is currently operated as express trains "Azusa" or "Kaiji" between Tokyo's urban area and the scenic Yamanashi and Nagano regions with Japan Alps. The E257 won the "Blue Ribbon" award from the Association of Railway Fans in 2002. Kato has faithfully represented the gentle curves and beautiful coloring of the body in an N-scale model in a remarkably realistic and precise manner.
