The emerald green E5 Shinkansen (bullet train) entered service in 2011, offering high speed service between metropolitan Tokyo and Shin Aomori in the northernmost tip of Japan. With a top speed of 320 KPH (nearly 200 MPH), it has earned the nickname “Hayabusa” (Falcon). Being one of the newest bullet trains in service, it’s filled with cutting-edge technology to ensure that it is both environmentally friendly as well as quiet and smooth despite its high speed – with its unique aerodynamic design, fully enclosed and skirted trucks, high pantograph covers to reduce noise and a counterbalanced suspension that tilts and sways in curves to maintain a smooth ride.
