Real train is equipped with the Abt System to cope with the steep pass region between Yokokawa and Karuizawa of Shin-Etsu Honsen, ED42 was manufactured from 1934 until 1948. The slope section, at its steepest, had a grade of an amazing 66.7%, the greatest in Japan. ED42 was taken over by EF63 when adhesion traction was adopted in 1963.
