The Series 651 trains made their debut in 1989. They replaced the conventional Series 485 trains. This was the first
AC/DC express train for JR West. It operates as an express train "Super-Hitachi" on the Joban line between Ueno in
Tokyo and Sendai in northern Japan. The streamlined white body was very modern when the train was first introduced.
The model N-scale prototype made by Kato is the version that was modified and modernized in 2000, just over a
decade after its debut. In this version, the dome shaped antenna on top of the roof is removed, the under-floor parts
is painted light gray, and red marking meaning "express train" or "smoking car" are added near the doors.
