JR Freight began to build the type EF66-100 electric locomotive to be used for high speed freight liners that started increasing in number in Japan. Although EF66-100 is fundamentally the same as the EF66-0 version, the current pantographs were changed to cross-arm type (PS22B), air conditioners were fitted in the cab, and air suspension modifications were made.
