The 100 Series Shinkansen were the second generation Shinkansen design, produced between 1984 and 1991 for the
Tokaido Shinkansen and Sanyo Shinkansen lines. A total of 1,056 vehicles (66 16-car sets) were built between
1984 and 1991. Compared to the 0 series of 20 years earlier, they offered greater speed, and incorporated
design features to reduce energy consumption and labour costs. Environmental noise, which had been a problem
with the original 0 series, was lessened by reducing the number of pantographs.
Despite the inclusion of 4 trailer cars, with more powerful motors (230 kW per axle), and weight reduction measures,
a maximum speed of 270 kmh was technically possible. Due to noise restrictions, however, services were run at a
maximum 220 kmh, with the speed later increased to 230 kmh for Grand Hikari "V" sets on the Sanyo Shinkansen
from 1989.
As with the earlier 0 series trains, rheostatic braking was used on motored axles. Trailer cars however,
were fitted with eddy-current braking with discs on the axles to absorb kinetic energy. New, improved seating
was fitted, with increased pitch (1040 mm in standard, and 1160 mm in green class) compared to the 0 series.
