In 2006, Japan's small city of Toyama opened a new light rail transit (LRT) tramway using tram-train technology – the innovative blending of tramway and intercity railway technology that's been sweeping Europe. Toyama Light Rail Co. Ltd. started its service aiming to offer a locally based, safe, convenient, and comfortable transportation system, which would also be people-friendly and environmentally-friendly.

The CENTRAM prototype runs in Toyama City in Japan on a loop line. This is a very modern, efficient and environmentally-friendly two-unit articulated tram, similar to many of those found in Europe and America.
