In 2006, Japan's small city of Toyama opened a new light rail transit (LRT) tramway using tram-train technology – the innovative blending of tramway and intercity railway technology that's been sweeping Europe. Toyama Light Rail Co. Ltd. started its service aiming to offer a locally based, safe, convenient, and comfortable transportation system, which would also be people-friendly and environmentally-friendly.

According to specifications on the Toyama Light Rail website, each streetcar (tram) is a 2-section articulated car, 18.4 meters long by 2.4 meters wide (about 61 ft X 8 ft). Floor height is 300-mm (about 12 in). This is a relatively small articulated car, with 28 seats and nominal total capacity of 80 passengers, plus space for 2 wheelchair passengers. In photos, it appears to have doors on one side only, but may be equipped for bidirectional operation.

Design speed of the railcars is listed as 70 kph (43 mph), although maximum speed on the line is 60 kph (37 mph). That's probably adequate for a line with an average stop spacing of 0.9 km (about 0.6 mile).
